Understanding the GWA Formula in the Philippines
In our local education system, a simple average is not enough. You must use a Weighted Average because different subjects have different "units" (credits). A 5-unit Math major has a much higher impact on your final grade than a 2-unit P.E. or NSTP class.
How to Calculate GWA Manually
If you want to verify your grades manually, use the standard CHED (Commission on Higher Education) formula:
GWA = ∑ (Grade × Units) / ∑ (Total Units)
Example Calculation Table:

Grading Scale Comparison: Where do you stand?
Different universities in the Philippines use different metrics. If you are a transferee, you need to know how your grades convert.

- The 1.0 - 5.0 Scale: Used by UP, PUP, UST, and PLM. Here, 1.00 is Excellent (Highest) and 3.00 is Passing.
- The 4.0 Scale: Used by DLSU and ADMU. In this system, 4.0 is the highest grade and 1.0 is the minimum passing mark.
